Gephardt: Utahns Losing Millions To Top Five Scams On FBI’s Cybercrimes List
Matt lists them as follows:
1) Don’t do it.
1) Online dating or romance scams. About $1.6 million was reported lost by Utahns in 2019, making romance scams the second-costliest scam in the state. Don’t ever send money to someone you have not physically dated for two years. Even then, don’t do it.
2) Business email compromise. When hackers get into a companies e-mail system and impersonate executives. Then, they may direct employees to transfer money, redirect paychecks, even trick them into buying gift cards as “thank yous” to vendors.
3) Other Advance fee schemes are the third-highest money maker in Utah, according to the FBI’s 2019 Internet Crime Report. Think of any scenario in which you’re asked to send money upfront for some sort of reward or deal.
4) Spoofing. It is disguising their phone numbers as legit businesses and agencies on Caller ID, just so we’d answer their scam calls. Don’t do it. Call your company back on their regular number and inquire about it and alert them.
5) Virtual currency investment schemes where promises of high returns never get delivered. New schemes to cheat us are thought up and are growing using Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other cryptocurrencies. Don’t do it.
